Every local business should have a website and that includes florists as well. If you love selling flowers but haven’t built an online presence, this article is going to walk you through the process on how to create a profitable florist website.
Before I get into the details, I want to share some insights about the flower business niche. In case you don’t know, it has been a seasonal trend for people to “order flowers online” since 2005. In other words, the market demand for this niche in the past 10 years is pretty consistent.
As a result, there are plenty of companies out there that provide tools and services to help get your business online, at a very hefty price. The highest fee that I have seen so far will cost you about $7,000 per package!
No one is going to afford that kind of investment, especially for a small business owner like you. That’s why I am here to share the following techniques because once you understand the basics of local web marketing, you can run your own online business without having to spend that kind of money.
Let’s Go Through Some Basics
As a retail business owner, I am pretty sure you know how to design a physical store. But what about a florist website? Here are the 3 main elements that you need to consider.
- Display a professional florist outlook.
- Offer products through an online store (online orders can bring you a ton of sales).
- Get your website listed on local search engines.
In order to achieve all these, I highly recommend using WordPress because this free software will allow flexible customization that suits your marketing preference. Although there are other easier to use the platform, WordPress is way more superior when it comes to building a long term online presence.
How to Create a Florist Website
Step 1 – Design Your Storefront
Once you get into WordPress, the first thing to do is to choose a theme that acts as a template to build your site. Ideally, you want to select a florist type of theme because the style and designs are better suited for your niche.
To search for free themes, go to Appearance > Themes. Under ‘Add Themes’, search for ‘Florist’ and you’ll see two beautiful themes here – Floristica and Sugar & Spice. Just click the one that you like to install.
Step 2 – Create an Online Store
A plugin is a software within WordPress that processes a specific function. To create an online store, you need an eCommerce plugin that will streamline product display, product order and check out points to ensure that your customer gets a smooth online shopping experience.
Most often than not, you’ll need to set up a PayPal business account as a merchant to enable a secured payment system for your customers. So don’t forget to get that one done as well.
The two most popular plugins for creating an online store are WooCommerce and WPeCommerce. To add them to your site, go to Plugins > Add New and type the name of the plugin that you want to install.
Alternatively, you can also purchase any premium themes that come along with built-in online stores, which means you don’t have to install any eCommerce plugin. These themes can cost somewhere between $40 to $80 and as you can see in the images below, they are more professional looking than the free themes.
Step 3 – Get Your Business Found Online
Owning a website doesn’t necessarily mean that people will be able to find your business immediately. What stands between you and your potential customers is the search engines.
(1) Write a Blog
Search engines such as Google, find your site through published web content. Hence, the more content you have, the more visible your business becomes. An effective way to add content is through writing a blog. I know what you are probably thinking right now – “I am a florist, not a blogger”.
Well, business is changing my friend, and blogging is gradually becoming an effective medium to communicate with new customers. If you are passionate about flowers, writing about it is pretty much the same thing. So, trust me – you CAN blog.
So, what do you write about? How do you get ideas for blogging? Well, there are a few methods that you can leverage to find out what people are searching for online about flowers.
The first method is using Google Trend. Simply type in any phrases and study the trend relating to it. For example, from the stats below, we can see that there’s a huge upward trend for “Rose for girls”.
The second method is Google Instant. By using the Alphabet Soup Technique, I simply type in a query like “how to make flowers bou…”, without finishing the sentence, and Google will suggest 3 more title ideas based on recent search popularity.
The third method is to use a keyword research tool like Jaaxy to brainstorm for ideas. For example, while searching for “best flowers for delivery”, I also discovered other similar phrases.
These are all great long-tail keywords suggestions that can be used. If you can write content using a low competition keyword (low QSR), then you can easily get your blog content to rank online.
(2) Optimize Each Blog Post
The next step that you need to do is to optimize each blog content so that it’s easier for search engines to find your business. The primary method of doing this is to use SEO plugins such as All In One SEO or Yoast. Inside the settings, the post title (title tag) is tweaked for uniqueness and a summary (meta description) can be provided for the search engines and readers to understand what the content is all about.
So when users search for something which matches the keywords in a title tag and meta description, the post will be displayed on the result page with the keywords bold in order to show relevancy. Here’s an example of how an optimized blog post would look like in the search result.
Similar techniques can also be applied to social media settings, so when blog posts are shared regularly, your site will also get some boost from social traffic.
(3) Reach Out to Local Customers
Here is where it gets even better.
When you own a physical business such as a flower shop, you can have it listed on Google for free. Have you done an online search and seen one of these boxes with maps popping up on the right-hand side?
That’s because the owner in this example had taken the time to claim its listing and now, the business advertises by itself whenever someone searches for Ariston Florist in New York.
With this tool, local customers get easy access to your business contact information and reading the reviews will give them more trust towards your product and services.
This directory provides constant exposure for your website and it’s totally awesome for growing your online business!

Nice post! Thanks for taking me step by step in building a florist website in such a detailed yet concise manner. I especially like the part about the alphabet soup technique as it teaches me to be more specific when thinking about what kinds of blog posts to write.
Now the next step would be to find suppliers and storage for fresh flowers…
Cathy says
Welcome to my blog Rosanne,
Yes, the alphabet soup is a great technique to discover what’s trending on the search. Sometimes you’ll find phrases that you don’t even know exist. I usually use this simultaneously with my Jaaxy keyword research and they always produce interesting ideas for my blog.

Hi Cathy.
Loved your step by step of creating an online presence for a florist business. Very creative article. I’m still learning though how to optimize my blog posts and get traffic to my website. You are doing a great job. How long did it take you to create a successful online presence?
Cathy says
Welcome to my blog, Mona.
Generally, creating an online presence is all about how much content you are adding to your website on a regular basis. A good content is a combination of these factors;
1) Written based on proper keyword research.
2) Engaging with reader’s comments.
3) Linked to relevant articles within the site.
4) Frequently shared on social networks.
All these took me months before I could really see some good traffic coming to my site, but it varies with individuals because we all have different learning curves when it comes to understanding and implementing web marketing techniques as beginners.
My suggestion is that you create a routine that works for you. Don’t feel pressurized to see immediate results. For more information, feel free to check out the training at Wealthy Affiliate and see how they can help you achieve your business goals.

Hello
Although I’m not exactly into flowers, you make building a florist website sound easy and fun.
Since I’m not into this niche, as l do not know much about flowers or what l will write about them (don’t misunderstand me, the only thing l care about flowers is receiving them), l will use your tips to build a lovely website for cosmetics.
You have explained and arranged things so well which makes it sound so easy to do. l hope l will have as much fun and ease building my own beauty website.
At the moment, I’m just excited about the idea, but not sure how l will write content.
Thanks for explaining the process. Will let you know how things go.

Great to hear from you again Roamy.
I am glad you’re thinking out of the box. Yes, these steps can be applied to any niche websites. Coincidentally, I am also working on an article about beauty blogging and will publish it very soon. So, do come back and check on it.

I have, in about 20 minutes here, learned how to help my mom setup her own website for her business. The florist theme would be perfect for her needs. Thank you.
Would the steps you outlined regarding finding keywords work for any type of business, especially those offline? You recommend Jaaxy for researching keywords. What’s the program like?
Cathy says
Hi Christian,
Jaaxy can certainly be used for local businesses, if that’s what you mean. It is a keyword research tool that gives you straight forward data without inflating with charts or graphs. There’s nothing to download and it works right on the browser. Even your mother would be able to do and interpret the data.
For beginners, the software offers 30 free searches (no credit card required) and 4 sets of video training will be available to show you how it works. For more information about other features and pricing plans, read my personal review about Jaaxy Keyword Research tool here.

Hi Cathy,
I love this advice. I think many businesses think that owning and maintaining a website is going to be quite a chore but the reality is that it can be quite simple. There are even programs out there where businesses can hire freelance writers to build a blog post around the keywords the business wants and they don’t have to pay very much, $10 a post is usually the max. But having an online presence is going to be a win for any traditional business.
Cathy says
Hi there Jessica,
With WordPress and all the free Google Tools, it is certainly easier to run an online business these days even from zero experience. This is something that a lot of traditional business are still unaware.
Now, you mentioned about hiring freelance writers for $10. Which program is this? It would be interesting to know. Thank you.

Cathy,
I love how you try to tackle every niche. I remember reading your post last time about how to promote your songs online. I am not into flowers, unfortunately but I learnt a deal from this post about Google trends among other things.
I am in the blogging and online marketing niche, hope you will tackle that sometimes (if you haven’t already). 🙂
Cathy says
Hi there Anh,
I think dipping my toes into other niches once in a while is good for the blogging mind. It puts me in the shoes of other start-ups who are all non-technical people but want to establish their own online business. Through this, I could see their limitations and reach out to them with the help of Wealthy Affiliate training.
When I am not writing about niches, I would be researching about online/affiliate marketing techniques. Here are some of my recent articles, if you want to have a look.
