Contrary to most belief, weekends aren’t always slow and easy for some people. Since many activities take place during the weekend, there are always new job opportunities as a result of that. According to statistics, 35% of Americans work on the weekends* and the number is actually rising.
Who would need a weekend job? Well, consider these individuals;
- College students who need to support their education.
- Part-timers who can’t get a full-time employment.
- Single parents who struggle with household finance.
- Professionals whose skills are always needed, especially during weekends.
- Employees who aren’t satisfied with the income from their primary jobs.
- People who are always on-the-go and can’t stand the idleness of weekends (like me :)).
That is almost everyone around us, isn’t it? So, if you are shouting out loud “I need a weekend job”, then here are 3 categories of work that you can choose from.
Find a Job That Pays
Ideally, you should go for a job where the crowd gathers during weekends because that will give the work more value. Where there’s a demand, the job will likely pay more than the minimum wages. Here are some examples;
- Work as sales promoters in events and exhibition. Although the working hours are long, these places are great to interact with new people.
- Work on seasonal jobs such as delivery services, holiday destinations and retail outlets. They don’t require you to be superbly skillful and often pay very well during the peak season.
- Work for the crowd that needs someone to care for their family or home while they are away during the weekends such as pet-sitting, babysitting or even house-sitting. These jobs might seem a bit isolated, but they offer a lot of flexibility in terms of working hours.
Find a Job with Skills
Say you want to learn more about something instead of just earning the pocket money, then you should look for jobs that involve a certain set of skills. The good news is, even if you aren’t really good at it, you are still very much sought after during weekends.
- Commit to a short-term internship in fields related to your expertise. Consider this a good way to grow your portfolio and to learn from some experienced people in your industry.
- Work in areas that you are highly interested in (apart from your core skills) that you know could use some extra hand, such as;
- Assistant photographer.
- Assistant make-up and hair stylist.
- Assistant nurse at clinics and therapeutic centers.
- Vet assistant at pet clinics and veterinary hospitals.
- Barista at coffeehouses.
- Part-timer at pet grooming centers.
- Part-time masseur at spa centers.
- If you are really good at certain skills, you can offer to do classes over the weekends as a;
- Language tutor.
- Fitness instructor.
- Art and craft teacher.
- Motivational coach.
And the list goes on.
Find a Business Opportunity
We all know that building a successful business takes time and effort. Therefore, if you want to have more control over your financial situation, you should experiment with setting up a business during the weekends.
It’s always recommended to start with something that you are passionate about (if you don’t have one, it’s time to think about it) and explore the opportunities all you can. Here are some examples;
- Join a common group and see if you guys can come up with a business idea together.
- Sell your products or services in flea markets or create an online store.
- Offer your services and skills through freelancing business.
- Teach your skills and knowledge by conducting weekend classes, create online courses or make money with YouTube videos.
- Promote other people’s business through affiliate marketing.
The beauty about incorporating business ideas on the web is that your marketing effort will reach a wider audience instead of just targeting locally. It also doesn’t require a lot of start-up cost because you don’t really have to invest in a premise rental or logistics.
In fact, if you know how to create a business website, your business operation is no longer restricted to just weekends. When the web business starts to generate some income, it is something that you can consider doing full-time, working from the comfort of your own home.
Make Your Weekend Rock!
I get asked a lot “Why do you work on weekends?” and my short answer is pretty straightforward “Because that’s where the money is.” Besides, the weekend crowd is far more interesting, so it’s a really good learning experience.
However, if you want an insightful answer, this would be it. Working on weekends have given me more than just a paycheck, it has taught me the value of my time and what I should really do about it.
If I make good use of my weekends to explore all opportunities out there, I might generate a stable income at some point and stop working full-time for someone else. Then, I can spend my weekends, for the rest of my life, doing the things that really matters to me.
Would you not agree with me on that? 🙂
No matter what you choose to do, just remember one thing. Having extra money can buy you lots of (temporary) things, but constant learning on the other hand, can give you a lifetime recipe for success and possibly, financial freedom.

Hello Cathy,
Most people want to escape their 9-5 jobs, so the weekends are definitely the best time to take action and build online businesses from home. This is my take on the subject any way 😉
You have noted some great points on finding a skilled job that does pay and I love the YouTube video too. If people do want to be successful at weekend jobs or even starting an online business on the weekends, they must really make sacrifices and put in the hard work for the real income to roll in.
Far too many people spend their weekends in front of the TV on the couch or taking part in social activities when they can be involved in “income producing” activities instead.
Thanks for your thoughts and Happy New Year!
Cathy says
Hi Neil,
TVs really suck the productivity out of us, doesn’t it? If you just look at the amount of weekend time – that’s more than 2,000 hours in a year – imagine using those hours to do training in Wealthy Affiliate and build a business with it. What a big difference that would make in terms of increasing our future income.
Happy New Year to you too, Neil 🙂

I like the idea of creating a business opportunity to make some extra money. Who knows, if you start your own online business, it may even replace your regular job someday. Sure beats working for “the man” for the next 30 years!
Great post Cathy!
Cathy says
Hi John,
The idea of working for someone for the next 30 years is something most people, especially college graduates, should really think about. Unless you are highly rewarded at work, staying employed for more than 5 years will make you wanting more time freedom than anything else.

I am definitely what you would call a “weekend warrior”. As a working musician, I earn most of my money on the weekends. I also work my internet business everyday so weekend are my hardest working and most productive days. Since I happen to enjoy both activities, I love the weekends as much as people who love them because they get to avoid work.
Cathy says
Hey Steve,
I never know you are a musician! Your weekend sounds very productive indeed. Yes, music and drinks are two things that make my Saturdays and Sundays rock, thanks to people like you 🙂
Craig says
Working on weekends can bring you some good money, because companies offer higher casual rates. Some of the internships can be expensive, people looking to do this on a tight budget could probably get financial assistance for this.
I personally don’t like working weekends, because I miss time with family and friends (each to their own I suppose). Finding a job without the necessary skills these days can be quite hard. To find the good paying jobs, the employers are usually looking for people with a good level of experience. So choosing wisely, and something you’re good at is very important.
Cathy says
Hey Craig,
I certainly miss spending time with my friends and family on weekends, but I do try. But by working on weekends, I also get the chance to make new friends and enlarge my social network so I guess it compensates.
There are so many jobs that we can do on weekends these days, from the non-skilled and mundane to the skillfully challenging ones. I think it really depends on how much we want that job (or that money) to get by.
Lincoln says
Couldn’t we all use a little extra income? 🙂
Looking back I’ve been trying to find ways to make extra money for a very long time…in high school, to get by through college, after getting my first “real” job that didn’t pay enough…and even today.
I really agree with you that starting an online business is one of the best ways to earn extra money–I do it myself! Fortunately I enjoy being on the computer and setting my own hours so that I can enjoy my freetime (and my weekends) how I please. (I am *not* a morning person)
It’s also one of my passions to help others avoid online scams that purport to help people earn some extra income and end up either costing money or wasting time without any real pay-out.
Thanks for the great post and I’ll be back to check out what other suggestions you have later!
Cathy says
Hey Lincoln,
I am a lot like you too. I worked on so many odd jobs during college, but I was also good at spending it all. I didn’t know (or couldn’t be bothered) about investing my dollars for my future.
Fortunately I found the internet and discovered that there are a lot of online jobs that can reward you very well, if you work hard enough. I also realized that I love writing, more than I do with talking so creating a business blog feels like the right thing to do. This could very well be my next career moving forward 🙂

I’m pretty beat by the time the weekend comes around usually, but if it meant making a small sacrifice to work on weekends to then leverage time freedom as you put it. I’m in! Great post 🙂
Cathy says
Hi Jen,
I know how hard it is to work on a business part-time (I am one of them too). Here are some tips for busy people like you that could be applied to make your transition a little better. It’s all about listing your tasks and staying focus as much as you can.
Jen says
Yes! More discipline is always good. Lists are the ethos of my work-life, makes sense they should be used in other parts of life too.
Chris says
The working life is something I am very familiar with. I was in the Fire Service for many years.. so weekends, days and nights were routine for me. Although quite well-paid, it was a lot of hard work and demanding hours.
Learning online marketing and starting a home-based business is definitely the way forward for anyone looking to improve on their financial income.
