The Amazon marketplace offers a lot of opportunities for affiliate businesses, but it can be quite overwhelming trying to figure out what Amazon product to promote for your niche. Well, not to worry. This guide will walk you through some easy steps to identify profitable products that will keep the readers coming back to your site.
Before We Get Started…
It’s important that you know what kind of niche you are going to work with. Each niche can offer a thousand of products, but your job is to focus on a few good ones and recommend them to your readers through the main product review page.
Ideally, these products are the ones that you use yourself, but that doesn’t always have to be the case. There’s a way around it and I’ll show you in a minute. However, relying on reviews alone will not be sufficient.
You also need to create a lot of helpful content (blogs, videos, etc.) surrounding your niche to attract readers from all aspects to make your review convert into more sales.
So, with that in mind, let’s search for an Amazon product for your niche, shall we?
How to Search for What Amazon Product to Promote
1) Product Popularity
If you have shopped on Amazon before, you’d know that there are special features to check for popular products. I used to go into each department to look for these items, but then I discovered that the search bar offers a faster result.
You just need to type in the key phrases and Amazon will come up with a comprehensive list for you. There are a few categories of popular products that you should know.
- Best Sellers – Best selling items from a product category. The item usually have a ‘Best Seller’ orange tag attached to its listing.
- New Arrivals – Similar to bestsellers, except that these are new entry products on the Amazon marketplace.
- Gift Ideas – Popular products that customers would buy for special occasions. The list comprised of a wide range of products and it helps customers discover gift ideas instantly.
Apart from these categories, I also found that you can use other terms that indicate product popularity in the search bar. For example, when you type “most bought…”, the search algorithm will present you with these ideas.
Other terms that you can use are;
- Most popular…
- Best products….
- Most expensive… (you won’t believe how expensive these items are!!!)
2) Customer Reviews
The second criteria to look at is customer reviews. While there’s no magic number that can be used as a reference, I find that 50 reviews (or more) represent a larger population of users that would give a better idea about the quality of the product.
So even if you don’t get to use it yourself, these reviews would still give you an in-depth understanding of product usability.
Make sure that they are not all positive comments too, as negative ones can make your review more practical and unbiased. Besides that, you also want to choose comments that are descriptive, well-written and preferably supported with images as it would help you to visualize things better.
3) Price Range
Most Amazon product commissions start from 4%, while others could pay up to 10%. Here’s a chart to show you the breakdown for each category.
To know what product price range to choose for your niche, we’ll need to do some calculation. Would you be happy to earn $2 per sale? Then your targeted price range should be around $50. If this is too low for you, then you need to consider promoting products that range from $100 and above.
The caveat is that people generally don’t spend more than $100 on online shopping. They feel more comfortable to buy within the range of $50 to $80. However, even if you are promoting at this price range, you can still convert generally good because;
- Amazon is a trusted online retailer.
- People may shop in bulk and you earn from those commissions as well.
- If they are Prime users, they might buy even more products on top of your recommendation.
- Your product review has recurring earning potential because it’s permanently there on the internet.
So while you don’t earn as much per sale, you can target wider audience size and make the most out of the traffic that visits your site.
4) Google Trend
Every since I started my online business in 2014, I’ve been obsessed with trend patterns and I love using Google Trend to prove my point.
For example, I found that the Dead Sea Mud Mask is one of the best sellers on Amazon. But it’s only selling for $14.95 which translates to about 60 cents in sales commission. Is this product even worth promoting?
Here’s what Google Trend is showing us;
Look at how the popularity surge since 2015! Imagine getting all that traffic to convert on your site. You could be making $600 every month by just promoting this product. If I am running a beauty blog, I would certainly take advantage of this.
5) Keyword Research
Remember when I said earlier that you need to build content around your product review to drive more traffic?
Here’s where keyword research comes into play. A popular product like the Dead Sea Mud Mask should garner a lot of searches online and within these queries is where your valuable keywords lie.
Using Jaaxy, my favorite keyword research tool, I know that this is already a widely searched product. Just look at the number of searches per month – 2757!
But if you are trying to rank for this exact keyphrase, it’s going to be tough because you’ll be up against 298 competing websites. So how do you attract targeted traffic while promoting such a popular item? You need to go for long-tail low-competition keywords.
Here are some key phrases that I’ve researched which I think have higher chances for ranking.
- The Benefits of Dead Sea Mud Mask (competition = 19)
- Dead Sea Mud Mask for Acne (competition = 29)
- What Is Dead Sea Mud (competition = 27)
- Dead Sea Minerals for Psoriasis (competition = 9)
- Dead Sea Mud Mask Recipe (competition = 15)
And the list continues. You can rinse and repeat this technique to build your content for whatever best selling products that you wish to promote on Amazon.
6) Unicorn Smasher
Unicorn Smasher is an extension that you can add to your Chrome browser that enables you to research Amazon products at a glance and translate those data into a list for easy interpretation. For now, this software is free to download so I’d say take full advantage of the opportunity while it lasts.
Endless Product Choices
With these 5 techniques, I hope that you not only know what Amazon product to promote but also learn how to make your online business profitable over the long term. To recap, find a niche that you are passionate about, select a few good products on Amazon, write awesome product reviews and build helpful content using targeted keywords.

Hey Cathy,
I am always on the lookout for business tools and articles that can help me promote my affiliate business. So I appreciate this comprehensive post.
Amazon obviously holds the market share when it comes to affiliate sales, but do you recommend any other online sales partners?
I take it isn’t wise to try and promote more than one wholesaler on your site.
Cathy says
Hey Keith, if you are just starting out, affiliating with one online retailer/company is better because it keeps your content really focused. But I’ve seen several blogs promoting more than one so it’s definitely doable. It was a children’s clothing blog and it has affiliate links pointing to Amazon, Zappos and other smaller companies related to that niche.
Having said that, that blog is quite established, more than 5 years old and over hundreds of blog posts. I am guessing that the online traffic is massive too so that’s probably why the blogger can experiment with different affiliate programs.

Cathy,
Thank you for the insightful information. Before reading this, I had been debating which type of products within my niche to promote. The most bought and most expensive searches were gold and are helping me find the most efficient and relevant products for my niche.
Is there a way to compare multiple Google Trend searches on the same page?
Cathy says
Yes, you can George. When you go to Google Trend, you can actually enter several search terms on the top panel for comparison. You are allowed up to 5 different search terms. You can see an example in this article I wrote about the wedding niche. Hope this helps.

This is great information. Knowing which products to promote on your website that fits your niche is a very important factor. You can’t just sell ANYTHING on your website. The products you offer should in fact, coincide with the general gist or content that you share.
