Yup, you read it right. I am talking about the little brick toys that we used to play when we were kids. And that passion never really dies, does it? Even as adults, they continue to fascinate us and now, you can even learn how to make money with Lego online. So, if you are a big fan, then I encourage you to read on to find out more about this opportunity.
First, What Is Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing is basically an income model that involves 3 parties – you, the merchant and the customers. Each time you refer someone to a merchant’s site and they purchase a product, you’ll earn a referral commission from the sales.
This monetization method is completely legal and it’s used by a lot of big companies, such as Amazon, to promote their products and increase revenues.
How Does Lego Affiliate Program Works
The Lego affiliate program is available at Rakuten Linkshare and you can join anytime for free. Once your application is being approved by the advertiser, you will get access to the affiliate links in the form of text, product images and banners that you can use on a website.
These links will take readers to the Lego Online Store and when they buy something from there, you’ll make a 3% commission for each sale.
How to Monetize From Lego
The best way to do this is to recommend Lego merchandise through a website, although you can also do this via social media sharing (more on this later). An affiliate website offers a few advantages;
- It creates trust and authority within a niche (i.e. A group of people searching for Lego merchandise online).
- Content such as blogs can be used for search ranking.
- Placing affiliate links on website content is safer than putting them all over social networks, which can be considered as spamming.
How Do You Build a Website
Before you build a website, you need to come up with a domain name first.
Simply put, it’s just the URL name of the site. In this example, I used SiteDomains to check for domain availability and found one that I think is very appropriate for this niche. I would go with the .com because it’s much easier for people to remember.
Once that’s done, I would point it to a hosting service and launch my website on the WordPress platform. Next, we are going to brainstorm for some topic ideas to create content for your site.
What Can You Write About
Here’s where the fun part begins. What kind of content can you write to promote Lego? A good place to start is to have a quick overview of the online store as this would give you some ideas as to what type of merchandise they are selling.
Based on the main menu, we can see that the products are divided into;
- Themes (i.e. StarWars, Minecraft, Disney)
- Categories (i.e Apparel, Books, Storage)
- Age Range (ranges between 2 to 12 years old)
- Exclusives (unique Lego products)
- What’s New (new release products)
- Sales and Deals (discounted products)
Sure enough, you’ll be writing product reviews, but it’s not reader-friendly to fill your blog with ONLY reviews and nothing else. You need to give your content some diversity and a good way to do this is to think about what kind of questions/situations a reader is coming from before he/she decides to buy a Lego merchandise.
The good news is, you can easily find these queries using the Alphabet Soup Technique. All you have to do is to type in a keyphrase and see what’s suggested by Google. For example, I searched for “what lego set…” and found 4 more topic ideas that people are frequently searching online.
Sometimes, even when your keyphrases don’t really make sense, you’ll still find some interesting ideas. Here, I searched for “ways to Lego…” and check out the results.
When people search for something online, they generally expect to read some information about it. So your role as an affiliate marketer is to provide this content for them, at the same time, recommending the products that you think are suitable for their needs.
Which Keyphrases to Use
Your ideal keyphrases should be elaborative and have low competition. This is because specific content will attract a targeted audience and the lower the competition, the easier it is to rank for that particular keyphrase.
To obtain this data, we are going to do some keyword research. I’ll be using the ideas that we brainstormed earlier and plug it into my favorite tool called Jaaxy, to show you how it works.
For the keyphrase “what lego set has the most pieces”, there are only 8 competing websites on Google. Basically, smaller QSR number reflects lower competition level so this is definitely a good keyphrase to write about.
Now if you look at “ways to store legos”, your competition level is 30 which isn’t too bad either. The next step is to produce content for these key phrases, tie it to a product and convert your readers into customers.
How Much Can You Make as a Lego Affiliate Marketer
There’s really no limit to how much you can make and it all depends on how efficiently you convert readers into customers through your content. Lego offers a variety of merchandise ranging from $10 to more than $300 dollars so it depends on what kind of products that you are promoting as well.
Say for “ways to store legos”, you recommend the Lego Storage Box (priced at $49.99), you’ll make $1.49 in commission (3% per sale). But if you promote the Death Star (priced at $399.99) for “what lego set has the most pieces”, you’ll earn about $12 in commission.
And here’s an interesting fact. One might think who on earth would spend hundreds of dollars for a Lego set, right? Well, guess what? The Death Star collection is currently sold out in the online store, which tells you A LOT OF PEOPLE are actually interested in buying it.
Imagine having all this “Death Star” traffic buying through your affiliate links; if you sell 10 units per month, that’s a total of $120 in commission for just one type of product! And that’s just a conservative number without considering other items that you would be recommended on your blog.
So, Is Lego Worthy of Your Time?
In case you don’t know, this brand has been around for more than 50 years. Lego isn’t just an ordinary toy company; the technique of play cultivates creative thinking that continues to fascinate growing children as well as grownups.
This brand will continue to popularize as long as people are searching for good quality toys for their kids or simply searching for a fun hobby. By using affiliate marketing to promote Lego, you can actually build a business by just recommending it to the online readers. Now, isn’t that a great way to make money from a passion?

I never would have thought of Legos! They have been around for so long and are still going strong. In fact I think they are more popular than ever. Anyone with a passion for Legos would find it really easy to earn an income online from reviewing them. The steps you laid out make it very clear.

Hi Cathy,
Of course! This is an amazing opportunity for anyone involved in the toys niche. I think this opportunity becomes especially lucrative given the surge in popularity LEGO has experienced over the last few years as a result of the release of the LEGO movie, followed by all the subsequent sales resulting from that.
I think your article was laid out in a very easy to read fashion, and you undoubtedly have pointed a lot of people in a great direction for choosing a niche.

Wow, this article is like a Lego Website Kit! Truly, the details are so useful for giving someone the idea that “You can really do this!”.
As a parent, I’m familiar with Legos and know just how much birthday money a child will fork over for those spaceships and death stars! If the parents haven’t already…
I’m glad you mentioned Rakutan Linkshare since that’s a new one to me.

Haha, I am one of those kids but back then, all I wanted was a complete set of farmhouse. After more than 20 years, I still keep them in my display cabinet. Perhaps it’s time to start a collection 🙂

Very well written on selling Lego using affiliate marketing. I am a great fan of Lego and have never thought of converting this hobby to a money making tool with affiliate marketing. There are many people out there who are willing to spend few hundred of dollars to purchase a Lego set.
Cathy says
Exactly. Even though it is an old brand, Lego is still very popular these days and and eCommerce will only make it easier for people to build their own collection.
