Every local business should have a website and that includes florist as well. If you love selling flowers, but haven’t built an online presence, this article is going to walk you through the process on how to create a profitable florist website.
Before I get into the details, I want to share some insights about the flower business niche. In case you don’t know, it has been a seasonal trend for people to “order flowers online” since 2005. In other words, the market demand for this niche in the past 10 years is pretty consistent.
As a result, there are plenty of companies out there that provide tools and services to help get your business online, at a very hefty price. The highest fee that I have seen so far will cost you about $7,000 per package!
No one is going to afford for that kind of investment, especially for a small business owner like you. That’s why I am here to share the following techniques because once you understand the basics of local web marketing, you can run your own online business without having to spend that kind of money.
Let’s Go Through Some Basics
As a retail business owner, I am pretty sure you know how to design a physical store. But what about a florist website? Here are 3 main elements that you need to consider.
- Display a professional florist outlook.
- Offer products through an online store (online orders can bring you a ton of sales).
- Get your website listed on local search engines.
In order to achieve all these, I highly recommend to use WordPress because this free software will allow flexible customization that suits to your marketing preference. Although there are other easier to use platform, WordPress is way more superior when it comes to building a long term online presence.
How to Create a Florist Website
Step 1 – Design Your Storefront
Once you get into WordPress, the first thing to do is to choose a theme which acts as a template to build your site. Ideally, you want to select a florist type of theme because the style and designs are better suited for your niche.
To search for free themes, go to Appearance > Themes. Under ‘Add Themes’, search for ‘Florist’ and you’ll see two beautiful themes here – Floristica and Sugar & Spice. Just click the one that you like to install.
Step 2 – Create an Online Store
A plugin is a software within WordPress that processes a specific function. To create an online store, you need an eCommerce plugin that will streamline product display, product order and check out points to ensure that your customer gets a smooth online shopping experience.
Most often than not, you’ll need to set up a PayPal business account as a merchant to enable a secured payment system for your customers. So don’t forget to get that one done as well.
The two most popular plugins for creating an online store are WooCommerce and WPeCommerce. To add them to your site, go to Plugins > Add New and type the name of the plugin that you want to install.
Alternatively, you can also purchase any premium themes that come along with built-in online stores, which means you don’t have to install any eCommerce plugin. These themes can cost somewhere between $40 to $80 and as you can see in the images below, they are more professional looking than the free themes.
Step 3 – Get Your Business Found Online
Owning a website doesn’t necessarily mean that people will be able to find your business immediately. What stands between you and your potential customers is the search engines.
(1) Write a Blog
Search engines such as Google, find your site through published web content. Hence, the more content you have, the more visible your business become. An effective way to add content is through writing a blog. I know what you are probably thinking right now – “I am a florist, not a blogger”.
Well, business is changing my friend, and blogging is gradually becoming an effective medium to communicate with new customers. If you are passionate about flowers, writing about it is pretty much the same thing. So, trust me – you CAN blog.
So, what do you write about? How do you get ideas for blogs? Well, there are a few methods that you can leverage to find out what people are searching online about flowers.
The first method is using Google Trend. Simply type in any phrases and study the trend relating to it. For example, from the stats below, we can see that there’s a huge upward trend for “Rose for girls”.
The second method is Google Instant. By using the Alphabet Soup Technique, I simply type in a query like “how to make flowers bou…”, without finishing the sentence, and Google will suggest 3 more title ideas based on recent search popularity.
The third method is to use a keyword research tool like Jaaxy to brainstorm for ideas. For example, while searching for “best flowers for delivery”, I also discovered other similar phrases.
These are all great long tail keywords suggestions that can be used. If you can write a content using a low competition keyword (low QSR), then you can easily get your blog content to rank online.
(2) Optimize Each Blog Post
The next step that you need to do is to optimize each blog content so that it’s easier for search engines to find your business. The primary method of doing this is to use SEO plugins such as All In One SEO or Yoast. Inside the settings, the post title (title tag) is tweaked for uniqueness and a summary (meta description) can be provided for the search engines and readers to understand what the content is all about.
So when users search for something which matches the keywords in a title tag and meta description, the post will be displayed on the result page with the keywords bold in order to show relevancy. Here’s an example of how an optimized blog post would look like in the search result.
Similar techniques can also be applied to social media settings, so when blog posts are shared regularly, your site will also get some boost from the social traffic.
(3) Reach Out to Local Customers
When you own a physical business such as a flower shop, you can have it listed on Google for free. Have you done any online search and seen one of these boxes with maps popping up on the right hand side?
That’s because the owner in this example had taken the time to claim its listing and now, the business advertises by itself whenever someone search for Ariston Florist in New York.
With this tool, local customers get easy access to your business contact information and reading the reviews will give them more trust towards your product and services.
This directory provides constant exposure for your website and it’s totally awesome for growing your online business!
